Wild in the City: give me shelter
Assignment: unexpected visitors
Location: backyard in Cannon Beach
Highlights: stormy weekend at the beach, including rain squalls, thunder and lightning. A herd of about 20 Roosevelt Elk, seeking shelter in a neighborhood not far from Haystack Rock, quietly took refuge in a backyard, resting in broad daylight.
Cows and calves settled into the lawn. The bull found high ground, and stood guard. But I had to wonder, as a pickup drove by with an open window- dog barking his head off- why any of the elk didn’t even look up. Almost part of the storm, they would move silently through the urban landscape, secure in their own numbers.
